When it comes to avalanches in Utah’s mountains, a skier can never receive too much education. The backcountry traveler who thinks he knows everything is asking for trouble, so it’s always a good idea to repeat avalanche education every season.
A good way to re-educate is to attend events that benefit the Utah Avalanche Center, which is the non-profit organization that works hard to save lives in Utah’s backcountry. They analyze the snow pack on a daily basis and report their findings to the masses so we can all make informed decisions before entering avalanche terrain. However, one problem Utah Avalanche Center faces is they are always operating on the financial edge, so fund-raising events are critical. In order to keep their heads above the fiscal snowpack, they have to rely on fundraising events throughout the year.
One such event is the 2009 Utah Snow and Avalanche Workshop, presented by the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center. Both social gathering and professional development seminar, the workshop brings the local avalanche community together to teach skiers about the history of avalanche events, how and why they occur, and what we all can do to prevent getting caught in a life-threatening slide.
Seminars include presentations on the future of avalanche control measures, backcountry rescue techniques, information about new avalanche ratings for selected routes in the Wasatch Mountains, avalanche event analysis, and guides on critical slope angles. Of course, after the classroom style teachings from industry pros are over, it’s time to gather for drinks at the Depot’s Blue Goose Bar in the Gateway.
The Utah Snow and Avalanche Workshop takes place on Saturday, November 7th from 1:00pm to 4:30pm at The Depot. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online. All proceeds will go to benefit the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center to support avalanche forecasting for the 2009-2010 ski season.
