For years, I’ve worn either a fleece or softshell jacket during the winter months… and froze my ass off. Sick of being cold, I finally got wise and got an insulated jacket. After wearing The North Face Redpoint Jacket for a season, I wondered why I never put down the coin for a decent, warm coat before. My eyes were opened and The North Face Redpoint became my go-to jacket for pretty much everything, while the fleece languished in the closet.

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket is surprisingly warm considering how thin it is. That’s because it is filled with PrimaLoft Eco synthetic insulation. Like down, which is very warm yet bulky, the synthetic stuff is also toasty and lightweight, but doesn’t make you look like you weigh 300 pounds.
I wore the Redpoint Jacket as a insulating layer while skiing, standing around shooting video outside, hiking, and hanging out at the campsite. In all situations, the jacket was versatile enough to be either an external shell, an internal insulating layer, or a wind-blocking shield. The Redpoint is perfect as a standalone piece when it’s chilly outside, but when temperatures drop into single-digits, a light mid-layer fleece underneath is enough to keep things cooking.
One thing the jacket is not, however, is waterproof, so when it’s raining or snowing outside, a weather-resistant shell needs to be paired with it. It also stuffs-down small into it’s own pocket in case you need to toss it into a pack for backpacking or touring trips.
Try as I might, I can’t really come up with any minuses. It would be nice if the outer pockets were fleece lined to keep hands warm when gloves are forgotten, but that’s really my only gripe.
The Redpoint Jacket seems to be a corner-stone of The North Face lineup, and it’s no wonder that they keep releasing this jacket year-after-year, only changing the colors. It must be because, in a nutshell, The North Face Redpoint Jacket is a minimalist, comfortable, warm, everyday jacket and I downright love it.
Specs: The North Face Redpoint Jacket has a ripstop nylon shell, nylon taffeta lining with DWR, and PrimaLoft Eco insulation. It features two hand pockets and one chest pocket. It weighs only 21.2oz.
