Fifteen states, including Utah, has declared January as “Learn a Snow Sport Month.” As obesity becomes an increasing problem in the United States, the snow sports industry hopes to motivate people to be more active during winter months when getting outside is less appealing. As a result, Utah Governor Gary Herbert officially declared January as Learn a Snow Sport Month. This designation is intended to help promote a national effort to build an interest in snow sport activities like skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Extreme skier Glen Plake has been promoting Learn a Snow Sport hard the past few days, as he’s the official spokesperson. He’s been pumping up several programs aimed at getting people outside in the snow, such as Go with a Pro, and the 50-for-50 raffle.
There’s even a website at www.winterfeelsgood.com where information can be found from how to learn a new winter sport, to equipment/gear tips, and tool kits for every outdoor activity imaginable.
To help people who want to learn a winter sport, Utah’s ski resorts are also offering discount packages to locals for ski tickets and lessons. To see a complete list of Utah ski resorts special disounts and offers, check out the Learn a Snow Sport page at Ski Utah.
January is officially the time to get outside, exercise in the mountains, and learn a fun snow sport. So get out there!
