Two days in Mill D: A ski tour photo blog
Skiers like to say, “even when the skiing’s bad, it’s good.” In the case of backcountry skiing in Utah during a low snow year, a little creativity and knowing where to go can yield nice results; such as soft snow weeks after the last major storm. Even if there isn’t a face-shot in sight, being with good friends in the Wasatch Mountains with a flask full of a Jagermeister knockoff is a recipe for fun times.

To seek out the soft creamy stuff, we made two trips in two days to Mill D in Big Cottonwood Canyon. There, we found what we were looking for in the north-facing slopes off Mount Reynolds, Big Water, and Short Swing. Giddyup!

Mason Diedrich inspects the north slope of Mount Reynolds on the skin up.

Approaching the top of Reynolds. We later chose the sheltered tree-filled slopes on the north side.

Adam lead us to steep but not-so-deep terrain, where the snow was soft, but rocks were plentiful.

Last run of the two-day tour, and Mason can't complain about this line in the glades.
