The Wasatch PowderKeg is the premiere backcountry ski race in Utah. But a lot of changes have been made for the 2010 event. New this year, the race starts and finishes at Brighton (instead of Alta as in previous years.) Also, a new splitboard division has been added to the competition lineup.
The race division, the course this season is 8.9 miles with 5,000 feet of elevation change over five climbs, including a boot pack. For the recreational division, the course is 3,500 feet, 6.6 miles long, and features four climbs.
After the race, there will be a BBQ and raffle. Since backcountry skiing isn’t a sanctioned sports according to the IOC, there will also be an awards ceremony where winners can stand on a podium and feel like they’re at a dirtbag version the Vancouver Olympics.
The 2010 Wasatch PowderKeg takes place on Saturday, March 13 at Brighton, Utah. Registration is currently open and anyone who signs up before March 1st gets a free t-shirt. Divisions include mens and womens AT, Telemark, and Splitboard.
