A ridiculous amount of snow has fallen in the Wasatch Mountains this May, and to make good use of nature’s late gift, Snowbird has decided to keep the 2010 ski season going a little longer. The Tram will keep skiers shuttling on the mountain until June 20th, making Snowbird’s longest season in Utah even longer.
The downside is that the resort will only be open in Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (including Memorial Day) until June 20th, unless freak weather gives Little Cottonwood Canyon 100 degree temperatures and melts it all before then – that’s the long way of saying “conditions permitting.”
The best part of Snowbird’s new closing date, is that it coincides with the Father’s Day Weekend activities that includes Brewfest on June 19, with 12 local breweries serving 3-ounce samples of Utah’s finest beer for $1 along with live music and food. Try to come up with a better way to end the season than by combining spring skiing with craft beer.
According to Snowbird, the season extension “would mark 199 days of skiing and riding for the 2009/10 season, two days short of Snowbird’s record 2004/05 season when the resort stayed open for 201 days until July 4.”
Amazingly, the mid-mountain base is currently at 117 inches with weather forecasts calling for even more snow this weekend.
Currently, the Tram, Little Cloud and Mineral Basin lifts are running on the weekends for a reduced price lift ticket of $62.
