I have to listen to music when I run, so when the Ragnar Wasatch Back officials said runners couldn’t use headphones during the race, I panicked. I began searching the internet high and low for anything that might lead me to a way around running with music. Perhaps a boombox similar to an ’80 hip hop music video. I was desperate. Finally, after searching for what seemed like forever and finding several ridiculous headphone speakers, I stumbled upon Safe Sound Sports Personal Speakers online. Their website only has one product; a set of open-air headphones that allows the user to hear surrounding noise and traffic, as well as their music.
To be completely honest I was a bit doubtful when I ordered them. But as I said before, I was in dire need of some replacement to my earbuds. There was no way I was going to be able to run a race without some sort of music. Music helps me pace myself and helps pump me up when I’m starting to get tired. The website claimed, “Safe Sound Personal Speakers (SSPS-1) by Safe Sound Sports are designed for use with your iPod or MP3 or just about any other audio source.” This seemed perfect for my little iPod shuffle. Users can either wear the speakers with a lanyard around their neck or clip them to your neckline on your clothes so there is a speaker beneath each ear.
The speakers soon arrived and I immediately took them out for a test run. I clipped them to my tank top, stuffed the extra long cord down my shirt, hit play on my shuffle, and off I went. At first it felt weird not having the music “stuffed” in my ears. But as I ran, I noticed I could still hear everything around me like cars, bikes and other runners approaching. I actually felt safer. I had the music at a decent level but it was nothing like when I had my headphones on. There was no way the music emitting from these speakers was going to be as loud as my headphones but it didn’t bother me. When my husband was standing next to me, he said it was like hearing music from another car; it was there, but it was unobtrusive.
The only other thing that kind of bugged me about the product was the cord attached to the speaker was too long. I think the length of it was a problem because it would get caught up in my clothes and I was afraid it would break.
Several days after receiving my SSPS-1, I got an email from Ragnar officials saying that once again we could wear our headphones. I didn’t even consider sending back the little speakers. They were perfect for my race. I wore them throughout the entire event and several people asked me about them. I told them they were great because during my pre-dawn run I could hear the birds chirping, the frogs singing, and a little bit of Metallica in the background to push me to the end.

Is there any where else you can buy these. The Safesound Sports website says they are out of stock.
Thanks.
Sorry, their website is the only place you can buy them.
I ordered some speakers over a month ago and have not gotten them. Not only that – but they have charged my CC and will not answer or return calls, will not reply to emails…nothing!
I ordered a pair over 2 weeks ago and I still have not recieved them. I also didn’t get an order confirmation. I have sent emails and to the company and I have not gotten a response. Hood to Coast posted pictures of the headphones with no info on where to get them. Totally bummed!
Like the others mentioned, I have ordered these over a month ago. The company sucks. They do not answer phone calls or emails. I have gotten so mad I emailed to have my order cancelled and refunded immediately. No response.
I ordered them for Hood to Coast Relay this week and I have not heard anything back from them.
Anyone find out if they are still available or will be in the future? Me and my wife are in the Air Force and need these to run on base. I hate running around the track….boring, so is running around without music. Is Safe Sound Sports still in business?
I too ordered these on July 30th and have sent several emails and left several messages and have gotten no response. Doing Portland to coast on Friday and obviously will not have the speakers I wanted for this. Very poor customer service and very mad that they could not even respond and let me know if they were going to come or not.
WalMart.com as well as I believe Amazon.com sell a accessory kit that inclusdes passive speakers that you can clip to clothing. I’ve provided the description and link below. My co-worker had a pair and I tried them yesterday (although to just walk my dog) and I was pretty impressed. I walk in an area with traffic and non-traffice and seemed to work well. Plus good thing about walmart at least is easy return policy. I placed my order today. Hope this may help some of you.

I bought these speakers for the 2016 Portland to Coast; the second time using it, a piece of the clip broke off. I email a guy that I was in contact with but never received a response.
