Brynn Barton was killed while cycling southbound with a group of friends on 700 east near Liberty Park when she was struck by a car that fled the scene. This tragic event has the entire cycling community in Utah striving to find answers, the driver of the car, and to raise awareness of cyclist safety on city streets. The Benefit Bike Ride for Brynn Barton will be held on Friday, June 17th to raise funds for Brynn’s family, and to raise cyclist awareness in our community.
The benefit ride will begin at the Liberty Park flag pole 7:00 pm. The group will ride all over downtown Salt Lake City and finish back at Liberty Park where there will be a candlelight vigil in honor of Brynn Barton. Organizers started a Facebook event page where, as of this writing, over 700 cyclists have said they will attend.
24-year-old Brynn Barton worked as a nurse in the maternal care unit at the University of Utah. She also worked around the world providing volunteer service in 3rd world countries.
Participants of the Brynn Barton Benefit Bike Ride are asked to donate money to benefit Brynn Barton’s family. All proceeds will go into the Brynn Barton Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo. Organizers also ask that you bring candles, and of course, your bikes. A pub crawl will follow the event in an effort to try and raise additional funds.
Police are still searching for the vehicle and driver that ran Brynn over and they need your help. The incident occured at 756 South and 700 East. Through interviews with eye witnesses, police have determined the following about the suspect vehicle:
-Volkswagen Passat
-manufactured during 1998-2001
-dark in color
-front end damage and possible windshield damage
