Back in 2007 three friends in San Francisco founded a shoe company with a simple idea: get off the treadmill and head outdoors. Fast forward to 2011 and Ahnu is taking off. Their booth at Outdoor Retailer was hopping, and with good cause: the urban lineup got a major overhaul and their trail tested cross training and hiking lines are getting stronger.
All shoes in Ahnu’s catalogue utilize Numentum technology; it’s a “neutral positioning” system that encourages your body’s natural biomechanics. There are four categories: Hike, Traverse, Commute and Minimal. Every shoe is built up from one of these sole options.
If you are cross training, try the Numentum Traverse series. They are built for trail running, light hiking and scrambling. Women’s models include the Orinda and Rockridge II, while men get the Woodacre and Woodacre Hydro (for wet conditions).
If hiking is your thing then grab a pair of Montara boots (womens’) and hit the trail. The Montara is a futuristic looking boot that is made for light backpacking and traditional hiking. They are already winning high praise around the outdoor industry. On the mens’ side is the Mendocino- a full leather upper with eVent technology so your feet can breathe easy.
There are plenty of other options in both lines, including sport sandals that are ideal for river walking or other summertime activities. Both the Commute and Minimal series are ideal for packing, traveling and of course, commuting. Finally, the mens Cityscape collection features some really bad ass dress shoes and boots. Two of Ahnu’s founders are women, so ladies out there can be assured that this company isn’t just paying lip service to female-specific designs. Philanthropy is part of their business model with the Breast Cancer Fund and The Conservation Alliance just two of the charities they donate to. Find out more at Ahnu.com.
