We had the chance to test some products from Sierra Designs this year, and each time came away impressed. The same goes for SD’s offerings at this year’s Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. The company has rolled out a new line of backpacks, new tents, and an ultra lightweight cold temperature sleeping bag. Read on to find out the details.
At first glance, Sierra Designs’ Rock and Ice packs look pretty standard, but they are anything but. An innovative framesheet design sets these bags apart from the competition.
The framesheet is visible outside the pack, and is partially covered by fabric pods that wrap around it like fingers. The end result is a pack built to haul loads with comfort and breathability. They also ooze with style- great color combinations and clean lines mean you’ll not only feel great getting to the peak, but you’ll look damn good doing it.
Lightweight is fast becoming the standard in backpacking, and SD is keeping pace with their Mojo tents. The tents come in 2 and 3 person capacity, and feature an integrated rainfly. The freestanding two person version weighs in at a shoulder-pleasing 2 pounds 11 ounces, and gives campers 26.5 square feet of sleeping and storage space.
Okay, that’s a lightweight tent…how about an ultralight sleeping bag to go with it? Enter the Cloud 15: this cold weather sack weighs in at just over a pound. Yes, one pound! SD uses 900 fill goose down in vertical thermal channels to create this freakishly light sleeping bag. Proprietary flowgates help keep the down in place while enhancing warmth and shedding the extra weight. You can’t go this light without a heavy price- look for an MSRP of over $400 if you want to float on the Cloud at night.
After seeing the 2012 Sierra Designs lineup firsthand, the verdict is in: this company is one of the leaders in innovative technology designed to get you into the woods as light and stylish as possible.
