Brewvies Cinema Pub in downtown Salt Lake City is the place to be this year for ski movie screenings in Utah. This week they’re hosting the the long awaited “Solitaire” from soul-ski filmmakers Sweetgrass Productions.
“Solitaire” is the third movie from Sweetgrass, and is the followup to their highly original Japanese ski and snowboard tale, “Signatures.” But instead of Japanese narration, this time around we’ll be reading English subtitles with a Spanish voiceover as the story takes place entirely in the Andes Mountains of South America.
Director Nick Waggoner and the gang spent two seasons filming in South America, and chose a theme of the 1902 novella, “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad as a metaphor of the skier’s backcountry adventures though ice and snow-covered peaks that parallel Conrad’s tale of exploration through the dark heart of African along the Congo River.
Sound heavy for a ski film? Sweetgrass wouldn’t have it any other way as they have quickly become the poets of ski moviedom. Based on the trailer, and the fact that “Signatures” won Best Cinematography in the Powder Magazine Movie Awards, it’s pretty safe to say that “Solitaire” is one ski movie you don’t want to miss.
“Solitaire” will screen at Brewvies on Wednesday, October 5th at 7pm and 9pm.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
