Flannel, plaid shirts have made a serious comeback in style the past few years. So it’s no surprise that Mountain Khakis, an outdoor clothing company better known for their rugged pants, has released a line of tops that includes the Teton Flannel Shirt.
The Mountain Khakis Teton Flannel Shirt is made from a 6.5oz yarn-dye cotton flannel that is finished with the company’s proprietary “Lava Wash” process. It features two Chevron Chest Pockets, antique-style nickel-reinforced buttons, drop tail hem, and a traditional back yoke with casual fit. In other words, this is one gussied up flannel shirt.
When I first saw the Teton Flannel Shirt, it struck images of ranchers fixing barb-wire fences, or hanging out at a local roadhouse cafe sipping bad coffee with old timers. At the very least, the shirt demanded I drive a red, beater pickup truck.
I don’t own a truck, but I put the shirt on anyway. I could immediately tell that this shirt is high quality. Most flannel shirts in the market are somewhat thin and made from cotton that you know will shrink three sizes after the first wash. Not so with the Teton Flannel Shirt. The Lava Wash Mountain Khakis runs the shirt through gives it a lived-in, soft feel that’s cozy without betraying its rugged exterior. Details like the metal buttons and embroidered logo secreted away on the back shoulder are also nice touches. Plus, I DID run the shirt through the laundry several times now, and it’s still the same size medium as the day I got it.
I found the MK Teton Flannel Shirt to be awesome for just wearing around the house and neighborhood, and it worked well as a nice-looking shirt for work. But as far as outdoor activities, I wouldn’t wear it for much more than casual walks. However, sitting around a fire while camping in the autumn months was my favorite time to wear this flannel. The material is thick and warm, but it’s not so dressy as to always be concerned about getting dirty or saturated with wood smoke.
The Teton Flannel Shirt comes in three different colors, all with the same plaid pattern. I do wish there were other patterns to choose from though, as the current one makes the shirt a bit too “cowboy” for my taste. Also, be prepared to shell out some cash, because the shirt retails for $79.95. But honestly, the build and craftsmanship of the shirt means it should last for years, which will stretch out those dollars.
