Get out the disco ball and platform shoes because Snowbird will turn back time to 1971. Snowbird may be approaching middle age, but the ski and snowboard resort in Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon has never looked better. Well, maybe in some ways they looked better as far as the hippie skiers who frequented the place in 1971, as evidenced by the lady in the photo below. Retro stylings aside, Snowbird will be turning 40-years-old, and to celebrate they’ll be offering lift tickets for only $40.
On December 23, 2011, in honor of their 40th anniversary, Snowbird will sell unlimited Tram and Chair tickets for only $40. Tickets will be valid for that date only. Not only do you get to ski for cheap, but the on-mountain party also includes live music and entertainment, ’70’s style, a retro fashion contest (so break out the bell bottoms butterfly-collared shirts,) plus prizes and giveaways.
You don’t even have to ski to get your disco on. Just show up at the Snowbird Plaza Deck from 2-5 p.m. where you can party for free.
Snowbird opened in 1971 when Ted Johnson and Dick Bass opened the mountain to skiers for the first time. Since then, the resort has grown with the construction of The Cliff Lodge, the expansion into Mineral Basin, a connection to Alta, and most recently a record-breaking 783″ of snow during the 2010-11 season. So get up to Snowbird and celebrate the past, present and future of this Little Cottonwood gem.
