I am a convert. Long have I worshiped at the altar of polyester base layers, they of the plasticy stink-after-a-few-hours-of-activity long underwear. But Icebreaker has opened my eyes to a new world of moisture wicking, insulating base layers with their merino wool offerings, like the Apex Zip.
The Icebreaker Apex Zip is a thick, long sleeved shirt with a half zip collar and retro styling that just screams “ski bum.” It features thumb loops for excellent hand coverage, set-in sleeves with racing stripes, and fabric made from exquisite, midweight merino wool that breathes and is odor resistant while regulating body temperature.
Seeing as how the Apex Zip is a midweight wool shirt, I tested it during in-bounds excursions at resorts like Snowbird and Solitude. The styling demands that you hot dog at the ski area, and so I obliged. I found this base layer to be perfect for cold days lapping the chairlift, and thanks to its sweater-like design, I could wear solo it at the base lodge without looking like I was showing off my skivvies. All I needed to compete the look of an 80’s ripper was a steezy moustache.
My favorite part of the Apex Zip is the thumb loops on the sleeves. These holes make a world of difference when trying to keep the cold out in the ongoing battle of wrist-gap. Sure you might have gloves with massive gauntlets, but take a serious tumble in some deep pow and you’re bound to end up with ice-cold, wet snow packing up your jacket sleeves. But with the thumb loops along with a sturdy pair of gloves, you’re guaranteed protection from any elements so much as coming close to your sensitive wrists.
Of course the downside of anything made form merino wool is that it’s expensive, and the Icebreaker Apex Zip is no exception. At $120, this is one base layer that will make you sweat when you pull out the credit card to purchase. But after skiing in it every day this season so far, I can honestly say that the cost is worth it. This is one base layer that you will use for years, and once you experience the bliss of a merino wool base layer, you’ll never go back to “ploy pew.”
