The Utah Adventure Journal Speaker Series is returning to Snowbird for its second year. The Wildflower Lounge at the Iron Blosam Lodge will once again be the venue for nine Thursdays this winter where you can hear inspiring tales of outdoor adventures from Utah’s most prolific outdoor athletes.
Below is the lineup of the 2013 series. Choose one or all, then clear your Thursday schedules to come and meet local Wasatch adventurers.
12/20 – Tyson Bradley: A ski tour across the Alps, skiing the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt. Tyson will talk about skiing the Haute Route, the famous European hut-to-hut trip from Chamonix to Zermatt. He’ll share his tales of searching for powder and adventure along the way.
1/3 – Bruce Tremper: The Avalanche Hunters, Volume 2. Tremper is the head of the the Avalanche Center and will share his history with avalanches from the time he was a child to his professional career starting at Bridger Bowl in Montana, to his current position at the UAC. Expect lots of laughter and insight into one man’s quest to understand avalanches, and the characters he met along the way.
1/17 – Mike Libecki: In Search of Virgin Vertical Earth: First ascents in Afghanistan, Antarctica, Yemen, Venezuela, China, Indonesia, Baffin Island and more. Mike Libecki likes to climb. He especially likes to climb unexplored places, as the above title suggests. Come along for the ride as he shows off his amazing trips that also lets him experience exotic cultures and people in some of the most remote places on Earth.
1/24 – Doug Stoup: Skiing the World. Doug is a ski mountaineer who has been all over the world, including the North and South Poles. His presentation will take you on a journey to the ends of the Earth, from the poles to the Vinson Massif, and all seven continents.
1/31 – Andrew McLean: Skiing the Mountain Kingdom of Alaska. The man needs no introduction in the Wasatch, as he literally wrote the book on steep skiing in our little range. In his presentation, he’ll take us far from Utah to Alaska and the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park where he will highlight his last four ski trips to the area.
2/7 – Stan Boor: Rivers Around the World. Shift gears from the mountains to rivers with Stan Boor, a former river guide who has paddled all over the globe in places like Alaska, Chile, Turkey, Africa and India.
2/21 – Roy Webb: The Lost Canyons of the Green River: The Story Before Flaming Gorge Dam. Journey to the upper Green River, and discover what it was like to float this stretch of water before it was drowned under the Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
3/7 – Meghan Hicks: Ultrarunning as means for accessing and adventuring in the world’s wildest places. Meghan runs… a lot. So she has some stories to tell about her globe-trotting adventures, including Morocco’s Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert – a 6 day, 156 mile run considered the toughest foot race on Earth. Come hear about it from Meghan, so you won’t have to run it yourself.
3/21 – Dean Cardinale: World Wide Trekking and the Human Outreach Project. Trekking around the world isn’t all about recreation. Some use it as a way to give back to the less fortunate. Dean Cardinale is one such person, and he will be talking about his experiences traveling the globe while spearheading community-service projects in places like Peru, Nepal, Africa and more.
