Cross-country ski and “Hawk Watch” (ok, owl watch) at the same time? Count me in! Hawk Watch International will be leading a field trip on show shoes and cross-country skis to clean up and prepare their Flammulated Owl nest boxes for the upcoming nesting season, and you’re invited to help.
Hawk Watch International is an organization who’s mission is to, “conserve the environment through education, long-term monitoring, and scientific research on raptors as indicators of ecosystem health.” Part of that involves cleaning nests, as well as leading lots of outdoor activities researching and tracking raptors all throughout the year.
The plan is to showshoe in to a set of Flammulated Owl nest boxes they have setup in Mantua, Utah, to clean them up and get them ready for the owls’ return in spring, and then ski out. It should be a fun field trip to help out a good cause. They say if you plan on attending to bring a lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Also, dress appropriately for cold weather. Space is limited, so it’s a good idea to register sooner rather than later.
The Mantua “Flammy” Field Trip happens on Saturday, March 9th from 8am to 5pm. Meet at the Hawk Watch offices at 2240 South, 900 East in Salt Lake City, or show up at the trailhead in Mantua at 9am. Contact Hawk Watch for directions.

Thanks for posting this, Jared. I’m going to Tweet the info.
Will this be an annual thing?
Thanks Andrew.
I pretty sure they go up to Mantua every spring to clean the nests.
