Last summer, I reviewed a pair of sunglasses with a unique twist. The Switch Eyewear Tioga sunglasses with a Magnetic Interchange System seemed to solve the problem of hard-to-install, interchangeable lenses. I really liked the system, but the frames felt heavy and lacked any rubberized parts for staying-on-yer-noggin. Enter the Switch Eyewear Lynx.
The Switch Eyewear Lynx are packed with features (well, as many features as sunglasses can have) including:
- One pair of shatter proof Polarized lenses, one pair of Low-Light Rose Amber lenses
- Magnetic Interchange Chassis
- Comes with one hard lens case
- Medium to large fit size
- Full wrap, large lens
- Three Point Comfort Fit to evenly distribute frame weight on the bridge and behind the ears Thermoplastic Rubber nose pad
- Available in three frame colors
- Also available with speciality lenses
The Lynx are very similar to the Tioga in size, shape, and performance, and the interchangable lens system is super fast and easy. But the Lynx are better than their predecessors as they’ve been redesigned for 2013. The frames are rugged and light weight – noticeably lighter than previous models. They’re made from “overmolded TPR,” which makes them wrap around the face better and therefore offer better protection. I really appreciate the rubber bridge that keeps the sunglasses from slipping off my sweaty nose, and the rubber inserts in the arms for additional stickiness. Plus the green highlights look cool.
But what makes Switch Eyewear stand apart are the tiny magnet inserts that are found on the edge of the lenses, as well as inside the frames, so the lenses can be removed and different lenses put in very fast. Several times while testing the Lynx on backcountry ski trips, the sun would come and go, making visibility flip from flat, grey light to blinding sun within seconds. But with the extra lenses in my pocket, I could go from dark to light lenses in under a minute.
In addition, these magnetic, polycarbonate lenses are quality. Think shatterproof, scratch resistant, and optical grade. Plus, the extra lenses are stored in magnetic “LensPods” so you can carry them around without worrying about scratches.
Now if you’re wondering if lenses held into the frames fall out all the time, that’d be a valid question. The answer, is absolutely not! I’ve crashed on my mountain bike and skis, and dropped them dozens of times, and not once did the lenses fall out. Nor have they been scratched despite my lack of careful storage in the included carrying case.
What’s also great about the Switch Eyewear Lynx (as well as all their models) is that the frames come with two sets of lenses — one set of polarized lenses for bright light and one set of non-polarized, rose-tinted lenses for low light. Plus, if you’re blind without your glasses, all Switch lenses are fully “Rx’able.”
Good Switch Lynx Sunglasses: Out-of-this-world awesome/cool magnetic lenses, good style for on and off the mountain, comes with two interchangable lenses, comfortable rubber nose pads.
Bad Switch Lynx Sunglasses: Carrying case zipper-pull tore off.
Final Word: Switch Eyewear Lynx are quality sunglasses on the level of better-known name brands that have an unbeatable lens interchange system. If your outdoor activities take you from sun to shade, snow to dirt and everything in between, you’ll love how easy it is to switch lenses.
