If you haven’t tried canyoneering a slot canyon in Southern Utah, then you have no idea on what kind of fun you’re missing out on. Of course if you are claustrophobic, then you’ll beg to differ. But I love canyoneering so much, I was thrilled to see that an entire episode of KSL Outdoors was devoted to exploring a classic slot – Leprechaun Canyon. As as result, it’s this week’s Friday Video!
Leprechaun Canyon is one of many slots on North Wash near Hanksville. It’s actually comprised of three forks, each of them skinny as hell. All three require a lot of scrambling and climbing to get through, and none of them are recommended for really big guys. But according to Jared Hillhouse of North Wash Outfitters, it’s a great introductory canyon for newbie canyoneers. In the video, Hillhouse guides KSL Outdoors host, Adam Eakle and some ladies from Goal Zero through the slot, while showing them proper scrambling technique.
If anything, this episode of KSL Outdoors should make you want to hop in a dusty pickup truck, ramble on down to the desert, and feel like a kid again exploring a sandstone playground. For more from KSL Outdoors, check them out online, or if you’re in Salt Lake City, tune in every Saturday at 11pm and Sunday at 4:30 on KSL 5.
Jared – you and Adam need to come on back down and hit another canyon sometime 🙂
We would love to!
