Praying for snow is an annual tradition around these parts. You see, skiers are a superstitious bunch, and the Pray for Snow ritual is our most cherished ceremony. Our entire culture of mountain life is dependent on something that comes from the sky and will ensure a successful ski season, and we know the only way to make this magic substance appear is through tons of drinking. So saddle up and get to the Ullr Ball presented by Voilé.
The Ullr Ball has a dual purpose: pray for snow to appease Ullr, the mythic Norse God of Snow, and raise funds for Save Our Canyons, the non-profit organization that is “dedicated to protecting the beauty and wildness of the Wasatch canyons, mountains, and foothills.” The event will be held on Saturday, November 9th at The Garage on Beck, located at 1199 Beck Street in Salt Lake City. Expect lots of praying, live music from David Williams and Triggers and Slips, tons of food, drawings for prizes from outdoor companies including Voilé V8 skis, and an Artisan splitboard, as well as frothy, Ullr-approved beer from Uinta Brewing.
Rumor has it that Ullr himself will make a rare appearance and he’ll even be joined by the Goddess of Snow.
Tickets are $25 in advance at saveourcanyons.org/ullrball, and the price will go up to $30 at the door. But history has proven that this party will sell out, so better pony up now before it’s too late or you’ll be shivering out in the cold instead of ringing in the snow season in style.
For those who can’t make it, pray anyway. My prayer to Ullr is simple, and goes as follows: May our winter season be blessed with cold air, deep powder, and a stable snowpack. Amen.
