Spring is probably my favorite time of year to ski. The snowpack is deep, the spring storms come in big and heavy, the days are warm, the sun shines bright, corn snow is massively fun to ski on, and every day feels like a party. The beer flows on lodge decks, heavy jackets come off revealing shockingly white shoulders and arms, and the fun types dress up in costumes for last day festivities. One resort that knows how to throw a spring party is Alta, and this April they’ve got tons of events dialed to say goodbye to winter and usher in the summer.
Alta in April Days is chock full of good times. On Saturday, April 12th there’s the Alta in April Demo Day at the Wildcat Base.If you need a new pair of skis for next season, you can try out ski demos from dozens of manufacturers plus score good deals on apparel. All you’ll need is your boots, a few signatures and a credit card (in lieu of a deposit). The best part is… it’s FREE! That same day, there will be music on the Goldminer’s Daughter deck all day long.
The same weekend is the AltaBird Women’s Camp. Top women guides from Alta and Snowbird will accompany participants for two days of challenge and fun on Alta and Snowbird under the warm, spring sun. The camp is April 12-13 and costs $440. Your fee will get you 2 days of on-hill coaching. Top coaches from each resort will lead you on a two-resort tour that will show you all the sick terrain at Alta/Snowbird. To register, contact Snowbird Mountain School at 801.947.8222 or email them at mountainschool@snowbird.com.
Then on Friday, April 18, the Watson Shelter will have a Red Chair BBQ and live music. The Watson Shelter is located mid-mountain near the Collins lift angle station.
That Saturday, April 19th Alta is celebrating Earth Day the only way they know how. The event will encourage environmental stewardship, responsible recreation and awareness of the relationship between climate change and the future of the ski industry in Little Cottonwood Canyon and beyond. The event will feature:
- Eco Geared Ski Vendors
- Green Arts & Crafts
- Naturalist Snowshoe Tours
- Ski with a Ranger Tour
- Ski Gear Recycling Drop-Off
- Apres Earth Day Film & Raffle
Finally, on Sunday, April 20th, spend Easter Sunday with the kids at Alta for their annual Easter Hunt Sunday. The hunt happens in the area in front of Alta Java with an 11:00am sharp start. This free event is for kids age 4 and under up to age 12. And of course the Easter Bunny will make an appearance.
But the best part about the last days of the season at Alta are the parties. The High Boy party, grilling in the lot, or just skiing in retro one-pieces are reason enough to shred some corn at Alta. Get your most fabulous costume ready, grab those skinny skis, and head to Alta for the best spring skiing in Utah!
