From the beginning, we’ve been high on Switch and their innovative, magnetic lens interchange technology. We’ve reviewed the Tioga, Lynx, and Axo models, sending them through the wringer and coming away impressed each time. This year at Outdoor Retailer 2014 Summer Market, the new thing from Switch isn’t more interchangeable magnetic lenses, but interchangeable magnetic eyecups.
Switch Pathfinder and Stormrider
Eyecups? Indeed. In the new Pathfinder and Stormrider models, there are no interchangeable lenses, but interchangeable eyecups. Here’s how it works: Switch has taken the frames and made them so you can transform the sunglasses to go with a specific type of activity by adding or removing the magnetic eyecups. There are two different eyecups – Activity Guard and Climate Guard.
Activity Guard screens out mild debris and wind while a soft, closed-cell cushion offers light weight comfort and allows airflow with integrated venting. Climate Guard provides a goggle-like fit with an ultra thin, flexible TPR rim for maximum blockage of debris, wind and water. It’s made from soft, thermoplastic rubber, is hypoallergenic, and also has integrated vent slots for airflow and to prevent fogging.
To further protect the eyes, the sunglasses come with an adjustable band that connects to the frame arms. By tightening the band behind your head, the sunglasses wrap around your face, sealing off the inside of the sunglasses even more, and ensuring that they don’t fall off.
The company tells me the motorbike community has responded positively so far, as the multisport eyecups keep wind and dust away from eyes, almost like transforming your sunglasses into goggles. As a matter of fact, I avoid wearing sunglasses when I ski because the cold air hitting my eyeballs blinds me with tears. The same thing happens when I mountain bike on a cold morning. And if you feel you don’t need the inserts, take them out and your sunglasses are totally normal again. When not in use, an included storage pouch tucks away unused eyecups.
I received a sample pair of the Stormrider model and will be testing them out on bike rides and ski tours in the coming months, so check back for a full review soon!
The Pathfinder model are large frame sunglasses, while the Stormrider are a bit less beefy. Both will be available soon with an MSRP of $159.
