A few years ago, when the outdoor industry was angry at the Utah state government over energy development policy (which led to threats of taking the multi-million dollar Outdoor retailer show elsewhere) Governor Gary Herbert created the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation. It’s the only one of its kind in the United States, making Utah the undisputed leader is recreation policy in government. Brad Petersen, who heads up the department, has done a bang-up job at his post so far. One of the fruits of his labor is the Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit – a yearly event at the Salt Palace Convention Center.
The Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit takes place on Tuesday, March 3. It’s a statewide initiative planned in conjunction with the outdoor industry, counties, communities, user groups, and state and federal land management agencies. These groups will all come together to share ideas and actively discuss issues surrounding Utah’s outdoor recreation. According to organizers, their mission is simple: employ Utah’s unique natural assets in a way that inspires citizens, communities and businesses to thrive.
Participation is vital to make sure everyone’s voice is heard. If you are a member of the outdoor industry, recreation user groups, county and community official, travel and tourism representative, state and federal land manager, or just someone who cares about Utah outdoor recreation industry, then you are encouraged to attend.
Top industry leaders who will be speaking include:
- Jerry Stritzke, CEO & President of REI
- Chris Warner, CEO of Earth Trek Climbing
- Ivan Levin, Sr. Director of Outdoor Nation
There will also be eight breakout sessions from experts, Q&A panel, and networking sessions.
In addition, there will be a Pre-Summit Reception, which will be held at the Utah Olympic Oval on March 2, 2015 from 6-8 pm. Attendees will enjoy networking and ice skating along with food and drink. This reception is free to summit attendees, but limited space is available. Please register in advance for this event when purchasing tickets for the Outdoor Recreation Summit. The Utah Olympic Oval is located at 5662 Cougar Lane, Kearns, UT 84118.
