On the heels of closing day, Snowbird unveiled their planned upgrades for the 2015-2016 ski season. The resort says they are investing more than $30 million into new capital projects. These new projects include The Summit at Snowbird, increased snow making capabilities, a new RFID ticket system that no longer uses the traditional printed lift tickets connected to wickets, and a large-scale remodel to The Cliff Lodge.
The Summit at Snowbird
Unless you haven’t been at Snowbird in a while, or anywhere in the Wasatch with a view of Hidden Peak, then you’ve seen the huge construction project at the top of the tram. That box of steel girders is soon going to be the new Summit at Snowbird. This coming winter, the building will officially open. The two-story glass-enclosed structure will replace the ski patrol and warming hut that has been at the top of Hidden Peak for more than 40 years. According to Snowbird, housed on the main floor of the new year-round facility will be skier services including restrooms, a coffee/pastry shop, Ski Patrol and a restaurant with two-story views of the American Fork Twin Peaks and surrounding vistas. There is more than 10,000 square feet of outdoor deck space and 360-degree views of the Wasatch Mountains. The basement level will house kitchen and storage. This new facility will offer food and beverage service in the winter and be available for private functions, weddings and meetings year-round. The cafeteria will seat 192 people and the second-level private dining area will seat 180.
Other New Upgrades
While The Summit at Snowbird is the main headline for 2015-2016 improvements, other new things to look forward to at the ‘Bird is increased snowmaking in Peruvian Gulch, Gad Valley and Mineral Basin, a switch to a modern RFID (radio frequency ticket scanning) ticketing system, and a complete overhaul of the Cliff Lodge. There isn’t much detail about the latter, except that a new meeting space is under construction that will feature 15-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, a wooded amphitheater and a divider to accommodate smaller groups. The new space will be located on Level C of The Cliff Lodge, will be 3,826 square feet, and will accommodate 112-400 guests.
