The western United States had a horrible, terrible, no-good winter. Ask any skier, especially from California, Oregon, and Washington, and they’ll likely just shake their heads and cry. One problem with having a lack of snow (aside from ski resorts shutting down early and our ski bases looking more pock-marked than Manuel Noriega’s face) is that ski filmmakers must have had a tough time finding deep pow to shoot sick footy of their athletes inhaling white.
But at least two ski-movie companies, Matchstick Productions and Teton Gravity Research, have embraced the brown pow, and forged ahead. The trailers each prove that when winter delivers nothing, you can make nothingade and still have fun (that made no sense.)
Matchstick Productions has churned out “Fade to Winter.”
FADE TO WINTER official trailer – 4k ultra high definition from MSP Films on Vimeo.
From the filmmakers: “Times change, just as each season gives way to the next. For passionate skiers around the globe, however, the time of year can never undermine the enthusiasm for their next great day on snow. Regardless of weather, conditions, or the effort required to get there, ‘a bad day of skiing still beats a good day at work.’ As summer eases into fall and fall eventually fades to winter, dreams of skiing occupy our minds and we focus all of our energy on returning to the mountains.”
“MSP Films, the production powerhouse behind MCCONKEY and DAYS OF MY YOUTH, is proud to present FADE TO WINTER. Featuring jaw-dropping action from Alaska, Iceland, British Columbia, Japan, Colorado, Italy, and New England, this film captures the spirit of nine skiers who go to great lengths for the sport that they love. Starring Markus Eder, Bobby Brown, Michelle Parker, Mark Abma, Tanner Rainville, Aaron Blunck, James Heim, Sean Jordan, PK Hunder, and others.”
“Face to Winter” will have its Utah premiere at the Snowbird Cliff Lodge on October 17th. Tour dates.
Teton Gravity Research brings us “Paradise Waits.”
From the filmmakers: “As the days turn into weeks and the weeks roll into months, it’s the moments when everything seems to come together in perfect harmony that resonate the loudest. For those who anticipate winter’s arrival with frothing mouths and the dreams of what may come, this past year came with an unfamiliar set of struggles as these perfect moments became more and more elusive. But for the TGR team, this only hardened their pursuit of winter’s rewards. Through the highs and lows of a curious season, they come to find that the moments found on the other side of adversity are the greatest moments of all.”
“From the award-winning filmmaking crew that brought you 2014’s Almost Ablaze, comes the story of one weird winter and the people who celebrate it… Paradise Waits – a ski and snowboard film.”
“Paradise Waits” will have its Utah premiere at Red Butte Gardens on September 14th. Details.
