You gotta hand it to the Utah Avalanche Center – they just went HUGE in their brand new, “Know Before You Go” video. In conjunction with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the UAC’s own Trent Meisenheimer, Bruce Tremper, Paul Diegel, and Craig Gordon took avalanche safety videos to the next level. The video is part of a new Know Before You Go program and its push toward avalanche safety education for all. According to Meisenheimer, the whole KBYG package will “get you started down the path of learning the language of the mountains and becoming a better and safer rider.”
Check out the video below, and prepare yourself for some EPIC extreme snow-angeling footy!
The Know Before You Go program started in 2004 to teach middle and high school students how to have fun and stay safe in avalanche terrain. Currently, classes can sign up for free, 45-minute to 1 1/2 hour presentations, and it has been approved as a middle school PE credit in Utah. But really, Know Before You Go can benefit everybody, young and old, newbie and grizzled expert. The UAC can present it in a classroom, school assembly, ski, snowboard, or snowmobile shop, community center – anywhere people can assemble to watch the video and slide presentation.
In addition to the UAC and CAIC, the Know Before You Go video and program is made possible by Avalanche Canada, Backcountry Access, the American Avalanche Association, the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education, the National Avalanche Center, Sherpas Cinema, Red Bull Media House, Brainfarm, and others.
