Cause-based clothing is all the rage these days, especially with the outdoor crowd. If you’re a gear manufacturer, you better make sure you’re giving 1% for the Earth, or perhaps keeping corporate giants away from wilderness areas, lest you miss out on that sweet millennial money. It seems that appealing to our inner tree-hugger is no fad. Well, what better way to tempt this new demographic than by planting a tree for every purchase? Or better yet, 15 trees! That’s exactly what Tinlid Hat Co. does when you invest in one of their products.
Fifteen trees no matter what your purchase; that’s the Tinlid promise. The fledgling company (they sprouted in 2014) was created by Jon Tuck and Will Andre, a duo from Michigan, who clearly love the outdoors. Tuck is an avid fisherman and Andre knows a thing or two about bagging peaks. The two founders are serious about being good citizens of the Earth, and even a small item like a hat or tee shirt will ensure 15 trees get planted via Trees for the Future.
Trees for the Future? They are a charitable organization that plants tree where they are needed most. Currently, they are focusing their efforts in five different countries of Sub Saharan Africa. Specific trees and crops are planted by Trees for the Future with the goal of creating sustainable food sources, livestock feed, and future products to sell (such as surplus crops). Not a bad organization to be associated with. You can find out much more about the details of the mission at Tinlidco.com.
As for Tinlid, I’ve been rocking their Hemp Hat this winter to see what kind of quality you get from these hippies. I have to say, it’s a solid dome-piece. I’ve worn the Hemp Hat to and from the ski resorts, around town, working in my back yard and during short hikes in the Wasatch mountains. The Hemp Hat is stylish enough to be labeled a “cool boy” hat by my girlfriend; not sure if that means I’m now cool by default, but I’ll go with it. Great color on the main body of the hat, and the Tinlid patch on the front is a simple and bold design. Additionally, the Tinlid Hemp Hat does not have that scratchy feel I got from hemp products in the past. Snapback style means you can adjust for any size melon, and capture that coveted old school style. Looks good, feels good…and since hemp is a renewable resource, you’re scoring double points for the environment. Pat yourself on the back while you parade your “cool boy” style around town.
I know this reads like an advert written by the company (I don’t blame you for thinking so), but the simple truth is that Tinlid is a neat, new company with a good mission: make sweet apparel and help keep the Earth green. I feel pretty good about pumping them up. As founder, Tuck, says “You don’t have to go out and save the world singlehandedly,” and he’s right; you can enlist any number of companies eager to help you with that mission. Tinlid happens to be one of them, so if it’s a new hat, tee or backpack you seek, give them a look. The trees will thank you for it!
I purchased a hat directly from this company in February, on their company website. During the time of purchase, the hat showed it was in stock and available. Immediately after my purchase, it showed out of stock.
I’ve tried contacting them with over 5 emails which all have been ignored. If this company made a mistake and sold a hat that was out of stock, thats fine. But refund me! They took my money and refuse to respond to any email. Which is theft. They are not accredited by the BBB and it’s too small of claim for a suit, so I thought I’d let everyone know on any website they sell their hats to NOT PURCHASE from them! They will take your money and never send you what you purchased! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
