The new ski film from Matchstick Productions, Ruin and Rose, sees its Salt Lake City premiere on Thursday, October 6th at 8:00pm at the Jeanne’ Wagner Theatre in the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center.
Ruin and Rose is the first MSP film by acclaimed writer/director Ben Sturgulewski, who is well known as the artistic force behind the Sweetgrass Productions ski films. According to a press release, his first go-round with Matchstick is “an epic creative vision brought to life by the talents of the world’s top skiers. Winter landscapes across the planet contrast seamlessly with a thoroughly-crafted story of environmental apocalypse, helping emphasize the fun and adventure behind our skiers’ quest for deep powder, massive spines, and perfect jumps.”
Based in the trailer, it’s clear that Sturgulewski has his fingerprints all over this film with its stunning cinematography combined with a narrative storyline that is often missing from typical “ski porn.” In this case, global warming seems to be the focus and how our future might look as seen through the eyes of future generations, when our beloved mountains are buried under sand, devoid of snow.
Ruin and Rose is presented by Under Armour in spectacular 4K resolution, and features veteran and newcomer skiers alike, including Mark Abma, Sammy Carlson, Markus Eder, Zack Giffin, Sander Hadley, Russ Henshaw, Eric Hjorleifson, Lukas Joas, Sean Jordan, Bene Mayr, Evan McEachran, Michelle Parker, Ole Pavel, Tanner Rainville, Austin Ross, Fabio Studer, Cody Townsend, Noah Wallace, and others. “RUIN AND ROSE” was filmed on location in Alaska, Austria, British Columbia, Bulgaria, California, France, Switzerland, and the sands of Namibia.
