There’s a new downhill trail in Draper’s Corner Canyon network, and it’s called Vertigo. Officially open on November 12, 2016, Vertigo has become one of the most lauded and talked about downhills in the trail system. Built by Gravity Logic, this trail has tons of huge berms, jumps, and small table tops. Vertigo is a flow trail that is fast, fun, and not too technical so riders of almost all ability levels can enjoy it.
Along with Vertigo, another new trail was cut to act as an ascent for the rip-roaring descent. The South Maple Hollow Trail is a pretty easy climb on smooth and wide singletrack. It connects with the Eagle Crest Trail completing a quick-and-easy 3.9-mile loop.
There are three or four trailheads that will get you to Vertigo, but for this loop I’ll describe the route from the Brookside Drive Trailhead. The start is right where the road dead-ends and you park alongside the street. The trailhead is on the west side and is marked by a sign that reads, “South Maple Hollow.” Follow this trail as it traverses and ascends up a small canyon through scrub oak groves. This machine-cut trail is wide and pretty easy to navigate with no technical skills needed. A few steep spots will get your heart pumping and there are a couple of tight switchbacks.
Near the top, South Maple Hollow connects with the Eagle Crest Connector Trail. Go right and follow it a short bit to Eagle Crest trail. Go right again and follow until it intersects with the Vertigo Trail. There is a sign marking the spot.
Lower your seat post and put a grin on your face because this is where the fun begins. Vertigo immediately starts with the huge, swooping berms that allow you to pick up speed and rip down the mountainside. Awesome views of Utah Lake and the Southern Wasatch provide an epic backdrop and threaten to tear your eyes off the trail. The flow is excellent and not-too-fast. Vertigo is similar to the Rush trail on the other side of the Corner Canyon complex, with small jumps and nice roller-coaster sections.
Vertigo ends right back at the South Maple Hollow trailhead on Brookside Drive where you left your car. The loop is so short, it’s easy to ride over and over again.
Overall, Vertigo and the adjacent South Maple Hollow trails are both awesome new additions to Corner Canyon’s mountain biking network. Hats off to the City of Draper for making such a huge investment in trails.
POV YouTube videos are already popping up of the Vertigo Trail. Here’s one of them.
Getting there: From Salt Lake City, take I-15 south to the Bluffdale exit and go east on Highland Drive. Drive until you come to a traffic light, and go right on Traverse Ridge Road. continue up to the Suncrest neighborhood. At a stop sign (the main intersection in Suncrest) go left onto Suncrest Drive. Stay on this street as it loops around the mountain and starts to drop down into the Utah County side. Go right on Brookside Drive and follow it to the dead end and the trailhead. Parking is limited to the street.
