Helly Hansen is in the business of making bomber gear for any and all weather conditions. It is only appropriate that at OR Winter Market, they were showcasing an upgraded and revamped lineup of winter-specific outerwear. I got to scope the new gear firsthand, and here are some of the highlights:
POINTNORTH JACKET
A modern day adaptation of the classic puffy-style ski jacket. The Pointnorth series of jackets are slick-looking, and outfitted with plenty of tech to keep you happy on the slopes. Helly Tech Performance 2L fabric and Primaloft Lux insulation will keep you warm and dry, while the Down Flow ventilation makes sure you don’t overheat. The Down Flow system features baffles on the back of the jacket that let air circulate once you open a few zippered vents. Overall I thought this was a great looking jacket, and one that is purpose-made for frigid winter days at the resort.
RIDGE SHELL JACKET
Freeriders and backcountry touring lovers are who this shell is aimed at. From the Helly Tech Professional line of gear, this one is loaded with bells and whistles. The Ridge Shell has a tailored fit, but added length to keep the powder out of your crevices. The powder skirt is compatible with Helly Hansen snow pants, the material is a rugged 3-ply fabric, and includes the Recco advanced rescue system (all of HH’s winter outwear now have Recco technology inside).
ULLR POWDER SUIT
I had to include this one. The onesie is back (did it ever really leave?), and this one is a beast. The H2Flow air ventilation system is designed to keep you from overheating, Primaloft pillows cushion the inside of the piece, and it’s fully seam sealed to keep moisture from penetrating your cozy cocoon. My favorite detail is the “Life Pocket” on the chest; it’s purpose is to keep you techy gadgets like phones and cameras from getting too cold and killing battery life. The Ullr Powder Suit is a unisex garment, so you and your snow buddies can coordinate outfits whether man or woman.
LIFA MERINO BASE LAYERS
I got the chance to test one of these last year, and came away impressed. This year, the base layers get new colorways and stitching, but retain the same 2 layer construction that includes a 57% blend of good old Merino wool.
