There has been a lot of talk about Bonanza Flats among the Wasatch backcountry community. It’s in the news because this huge swath of land is among the last pristine areas of the Wasatch and there is an opportunity for it to be protected. But to make that happen, a lot of money needs to be raised. The Wasatch Backcountry Alliance has compiled a list of fundraising events where you can help donate to the cause. But first, a little background:
Bonanza Flats is a 1,350-acre parcel of land located at the top to Big Cottonwood Canyon, west of Guardsman Pass. The area includes Peak 10420, which is popular for backcountry skiers. The land is also used by hikers to Blood Lake and for mountain bikers riding the Wasatch Crest Trail. There have been several plans for development under the ownership of Talisker (who used to own Canyons Resort). But Park City has recently ponied up 25-million dollars from a bond approved by voters to purchase the land. But 13-million dollars more needs to be raised for the land purchase. That means the outdoor community, along with dozens of non-profit organizations, are rallying to raise 3-million dollars in the next 6 weeks to help out.
To incentivize us outdoorsy folks, there are four events scheduled to raise money.
1. Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival in Park City
The annual WWA film fest happens on Thursday, February 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Santy Auditorium in Park City. The first 100 people who purchase tix in advance online get free beer at the pre-party at Red Rock Brewing. The party starts at 5:30 p.m.
2. WWA Backcountry Film Fest at Brewvies
A week later, the Backcountry Film Fest moves down to Brewvies in downtown Salt Lake City. The event happens on Thursday, February 16th at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30. Black Diamond, Voile, Patagonia and more will have sweet gear donated for the fundraising raffle. Behemian Brewery will be on hand giving away free pint glasses and selling discount beer.
3. Tahoe Adventure Film Festival
Brewvies is also hosting the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival on Saturday, February 11th, with all proceeds from the raffle going to Wasatch Backcountry Alliance! Tickets for this event are available at Brewvies. Tickets for both BC film festivals can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com.
4. 2nd annual Free Shuttle Day
Finally, Saturday, February 25th is Free Shuttle Day. Wasatch Backcountry Alliance, along with their partners, will supply vans to pick up skiers in the valley and dropping them at trailheads in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon. Parking at backcountry trailheads has become a bit impossible these days, so save yourself some stress and hop on the shuttle. While this is a free service, donations to the cause would be greatly appreciated. You can pre-register online, which will be announced soon.
