Kids on mountain bikes are becoming more common these days. With high school mountain bike teams seeing off-the-charts participation, to tykes shredding singletrack on Strider Bikes, It’s great to see groms hitting the trails. Along with pint-sized bikes with trail-worthy frames and components in kids sizes, there is now apparel for kids such as gear from Skidz MTB.
Who is Skidz MTB?
Skidz is a new company based in Fairfax, California, that was born out of the pandemic. With more families getting outside, the company saw a need to produce a mountain bike apparel line in high-end technical fabrics that are well-fitted for the next generation of young rippers. They offer mountain bike shorts, jerseys, gloves and after-ride apparel for kids ages 6-15. Every item is crafted with the same quality as an adult kit, with light, breathable fabrics to wick sweat and maintain comfort.
My 6-year-old son, Ridge, has ben rocking a Skidz MTB kit on the trails this summer with the mountain bike jersey, shorts and gloves.
Skidz MTB Flagship Jersey and Shorts
The Skidz MTB jersey is really nice. The fabric is soft, super light weight, and well fitted. The quality is every bit as good as an adult mountain bike shirt. When Ridge wears it, he feels like a grown-up mountain biker, which gives him a big confidence boost when tackling new singletrack terrain.
The MTB Mountain Bike Shorts are also a smaller version of adult shorts. They feature:
- Lightweight 3-way stretch fabric
- 2 hand pockets
- Tech Grip Waist
- Lightweight 3-way stretch fabric
- Water resistant, breathable fabrics
- Velcro Adjustable waist
The shorts do not come with any padding, but there are padded chamois for kids available from different brands. Ridge, however, does not wear a chamois – the Skidz MTB shorts are enough on their own. And they pair perfectly with the jersey to make a complete kit.
Skidz also make kids bike gloves. Their Grip It and Rip It full-fingered gloves feature:
- Four-way stretch breathable mesh upper
- fingertips with silicone printing on braking fingers
- Flex zones at knuckles
Unfortunately, as of this writing, Ridge’s gloves are too big for him. But after a growth spurt, they’ll fit and he will be sporting them probably next summer.
Final Word
Overall, it’s awesome to see a company make real mountain bike gear for kids. Skidz has proven that our children deserve to wear the same quality apparel that their parents do. Having light weight, high-tech fabrics on their bodies allows them to stay cool and therefore stay out longer. While I can’t review the product myself, Ridge gives the Skidz MTB kit a big thumbs up.
