I am a cynical bastard… at least I used to be. Show me a video about children, even kids in the outdoors, and I say, “meh,” shrug my shoulders, and could not care less. Yes, I was one of those jerks that don’t like kids. But now that I’m about to have one of my own this May, suddenly EVERYTHING about children is of interest, ESPECIALLY when it involves the outdoors. So for this week’s Friday Video, I’ll admit to getting a little choked up at “An Education: A Father/Daughter Trip of Discovery” from Mountain Hardwear.
In it, Salt Lake City local Mike Libecki takes his 11-year-old daughter, Lilliana, backcountry skiing for the first time. They skin up to Twin Lakes Pass via Grizzly Gulch at Alta, and the clip just oozes proud papa vibes and child-like fascination. The trip is in preparation for an expedition to Antarctica, and Libecki is taking Lilliana along for the ride.
How many 11-year-old girls can say they’ve skied down to penguins in Antarctica? This video show it all. It’s generational, inspiring, and makes me long for the day, perhaps 11 years from now, when I can take my son backcountry skiing for the first time. Here’s the video:
