Spring skiing, with its warm weather, blue skies and corn snow, is the perfect reason to get into the mountains while the rest of the masses break out golf clubs and mountain bikes. Skiers instead choose to revel in the high country while wearing t-shirts and sunglasses as they seek out that short window where the corn snow is forgiving and perfect… and the parking lot barbecue is the best party in town.
Nothing inspires the need for grilling and drinking beer like a warm day, and late-season skiing provides the only inspiration needed. After spending a morning on the hill, we skiers work up a mad hunger for cooked meat and a tasty brew. In the spring, resort lodges sit empty as skiers and snowboarders gather among parked cars and relax in camp chairs with a cold ale in one hand and a cut of meat in the other.
The lower parking lot at Solitude Mountain Resort is a perfect example of the tailgate community coming out of the wood work. Ski trails spill down to the lot like waves breaking against a shore, turning the pavement into a beach where skiers and snowboarders hang out after a round of morning runs.
Each spring day during lunch time and into the afternoon, the lot fills up with families and groups of ski bums with the same idea: to crack open some beer and grill up bratwurst and burgers. Music plays from car stereos. Lawn chairs are unfolded. People soak up the sun, eat and drink their fill, and enjoy good conversation among friends.
And that’s what spring skiing is all about. Sure, the skiing is good, the weather is fine, and the snow is soft. But the after-parties are the climax of the day, where we practice for the numerous backyard and camping barbecues yet to come. As the snow melts around us, we celebrate, not so much the coming of spring, but to say goodbye to another excellent ski season nearing its end. This is something I always look forward to. I think this is the best bonding activity for every family. Just hanging out, enjoying the sun, chatting, playing and minding the grill!
