Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort has come up with a novel way to get people on the slopes and above the unhealthy air in the Salt Lake Valley. This “Red Air” discount of $20 off tram and chairs lift tickets on any day issued as a red air quality alert in Salt Lake County means…

January is Learn a Snow Sport Month
Fifteen states, including Utah, has declared January as “Learn a Snow Sport Month.” As obesity becomes an increasing problem in the United States, the snow sports industry hopes to motivate people to be more active during winter months when getting outside is less appealing. As a result, Utah Governor Gary Herbert officially declared January as…
Buy discount lift tickets and help the UAC
The Utah Avalanche Center, or UAC, is a vital, life-saving organization for anyone who enjoys winter recreation in Utah’s mountains. With an experienced team of expert avalanche forecasters, they work out in the field analyzing snowpack, making judgements about avalanche danger, then reporting back to all of us via their website and telephone hotline. Without…
Holiday gift idea from Backcountry.com
Let’s face it. Holiday shopping is hard to do. There is so much pressure to find the right gift for certain people that becoming a mind reader would be pretty helpful. But those of us who have outdoor gear junkies for friends and family need not worry. Backcountry.com is offering gift certificates for the holidays…
First annual Freeride Avalanche Summit to benefit UAC
Snowbird and the Utah Avalanche Center are teaming up this year to present the first annual Freeride Avalanche Summit. The event will consist of two-day clinics designed for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders who are looking to explore the backcountry and need professional instruction on avalanche awareness, safety and rescue.
Solitude wants to consume Silver Fork Canyon
As a skier who enjoys riding both in the backcountry and at resorts, I have mixed feelings when stories are told of resorts trying to expand their acreage by overtaking pristine mountain landscapes. On one hand, I think it would be awesome to have new in-bounds terrain to explore. On the other hand, I’d hate to see lift towers and crowds swarming what was once a favorite area for backcountry enthusiasts.
Alta opens on Wednesday, November 25
Alta has closed itself to all uphill traffic, which can only mean one thing: they’re preparing the mountain for downhill traffic. In fact, Alta has announced that they will be opening on Wednesday, November 25, thanks to Sunday night’s storm that brought colder temperatures and dropped 10 inches of snow on the Wasatch.
Phillips 66 Frequent Fueler Card gets you 2-for-1 Snowbird passes
Finding ways to ski for less at Utah resorts can be a challenge. There are local discounts out there, such as Utah resident special prices at Deer Valley, or the Cherry Picker Pass at The Canyons. But unfortunately, Utah doesn’t have the kind of love-for-locals that Colorado skiers get. Over there, Coloradoans can get a season pass to three resorts (Arapahoe Basin, Keystone and Breckenridge) for only $399. Those of us living in Utah have to scrounge for deals.
Black Friday deals and coupons for outdoor gear
Black Friday conjures up images of rabid shoppers breaking down the front doors of retail stores to run full-speed down the aisles as they hunt for the best deals on just about everything from electronics to clothing. Outdoor recreation doesn’t seem to fall into this madness since you don’t really see the masses camped in sub-zero temperatures outside REI to score a cheap fleece jacket
First day photos from Snowbird
Snowbird officially opened today! They’ve started up the chairlifts at 9am and skiers can now start making turns under the Gadzoom and Chikadee lifts. Snowbird officials hope to open even more terrain before Thanksgiving weekend, depending on any storms and colder temperatures in the forecast. Snowbird is currently charging an early-season price of $52 dollars…
