My search for mountain bike shoes that are tight yet comfortable is at an end. The Pearl Izumi X-Alp Enduro bike shoes have everything I wanted for cruising the trails of Utah. Stiff plates for rigidity while pedaling? Check. Lightweight? Check. Breathable? Check. Deep soles for easy walking? Check. A way to ratchet down the straps for that extra-tight fit? Check.
I’ve always wanted my mountain bike shoes to be like ski boots, in that tight ski boots allow for precision turning on the snow. For me, bike shoes are the same. If I’m grinding up a steep hill covered in sand or loose pebbles, the last thing I want is my feet moving around inside my shoes, taking away any power I’m hoping to get out of them. The Pearl Izumi X-Alp Enduro bike shoes have solved that problem, making me very happy, whether I’m out for a leisurely day on the Pipeline Trail or hitting it hard at Mueller Park.
The Pearl Izumi X-Alp Enduro bike shoes feature stiff nylon plates that are flexible enough for walking but rigid enough for pedaling. Not only does the power ratchet at the ankle provide that needed tightness, but the shoes also have two “rip-and-stick” closure straps that lock down the front foot. EVA midsoles are soft and comfortable and I appreciate the mesh and synthetic materials on the outside of the shoes that are nice and breathable. Plus, during those hike-a-bike moments, the lugged soles provide traction and keep SPD cleats out of the way inside the rubber soles.
Overall, I’m very happy with the Pearl Izumi X-Alp Enduro bike shoes for riding everything from long, hard days in the mountains and desert trails, to quick trips to the store in the city.
