When winter comes and the snow starts trickling down, the shorts and lightweight pants get tossed into storage boxes and our thick, long legged pants see the light of day once again. Living in a mountain town though, means it can be difficult to find a pair of pants that can withstand winter’s wrath, especially for those who work outdoors. Most khakis are so thin that wearing them in a cold wind is akin to wrapping tissue paper around your legs.
Enter the Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant. Based in Jackson, Wyoming, Mountain Khakis makes pants (as their name suggests), for people living and working in the high country. Their most popular pants, the Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant, provides the wearer with the classic khaki look while also being thick, durable, and warm.

The Original Mountain Pant is made from 10.4oz cotton canvas, which gives the pants a very stiff, thick feel that makes one imagine that they could stand up to just about anything, whether it’s bushwhacking through a grove of scrub oak or just taking the dog for a hike on a cold day.
Mountain Khakis have created a “signature diamond-shaped action gusset,” which means that there is tons of room in the crotch. This feature isn’t intended to market toward men of gifted physique, but rather allows freedom of movement while working or playing.
When I first put on a pair of the Original Mountain Pant, the cotton canvas material did feel very stiff, but after a few days and a couple of washings, they broke in easy and are now very comfortable. On closer inspection, I noticed fine details that go into the quality of the pants, such as triple stitched seams. Burly.
I wore the pants from July to November and found that they are too thick and hot for the summer months, so they stayed in the closet. But when fall rolled around, the Original Mountain Pant became my go-to pants. I wore them outside while on the clock at work and appreciated how well they blocked cold wind. They also performed well on hikes in the Wasatch and even sitting around the campfire in the deserts of Western Colorado.
The Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant isn’t some technical piece of gear for outdoor adventure. The pants are just pants. But they’re good pants made from quality material that should last a long time and withstand many days of hiking, working and relaxing outdoors.
