One of the Salt Lake Valley’s least known canyons, Killyons Canyon, has been spared from the bulldozer of development and will forever be open space thanks to a $500,000 donation from someone who wants to remain anonymous.
As we told you in an article last month, a deadline loomed for Utah Open Lands to raise 2.2 million dollars, or else the Salt Lake County Council would pull their $900,000 pledge.
Things weren’t looking good for Killyons Canyon at that point, as Utah Open Lands say they would have to raise $10,000 a day in private donation – an near impossibility. But thanks to that generous doner, the organization was able to secure the needed funds to buy the property located in upper Emigration Canyon.
Along with the $500,000 private donation, Salt Lake County will still kick in $900,000, and the state will contribute $100,000 with Salt Lake City’s $300,000. That makes the property cost $1.8 million total after the property owners knocked $400,000 off the asking price.
It’s a great day for Salt Lake Valley hikers and mountain bikers as Killyons Canyon will remain open to the public as an outdoor recreation haven in the mountains above the city.
