Park City Mountain Resort has fired the first shot in what may become Utah’s long-awaited season pass price war. The resort unveiled a new adult season pass price of only $699, by far the lowest price among the major ski resorts in the Cottonwood Canyons and Park City.

The new PCMR season pass price is for a basic pass that can be upgraded with a choice of three additional options. These include: “Fast Tracks” access to express lanes in lift lines, underground parking, and night skiing/riding.

Each option will tack on an additional $200 to the cost of the pass for a total of $1,299 if you choose all three. But if all you care about is skiing, then you can’t beat the $699 price tag for an adult season pass at one of Utah’s largest resorts. You can get more details about Park City’s new season pass prices on their website.

So what does this sudden decrease in Park City Mountain Resort’s season pass price mean? Will other Utah resorts lose enough business to Park City that they will be forced to lower their prices next season? Will this lead to an all-out price war that will have local skiers  and snowboarders jumping for joy?

In Colorado, a price war occurred years ago among the ski resorts along the I-70 corridor. The result meant that locals can now buy an “Epic Pass” for only $599, giving them season-long access to five resorts, including Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin. If only Utah locals could be so lucky. Is PCMR’s action the first volley in a soon-to-be fierce price competition along the Wasatch Front? Time will tell… The Canyons have yet to announce their season pass pricing for the 2010/11 season.

Let the games begin, and may the local skiers win.
