Volkl is expanding their lineup of backcountry skis for the 2011/2012 season, with entirely new models and updates on the old. One of those new models, the Volkl Inuk, found its way into my arms at the 2011 Outdoor Retailer All Mountain Demo at Solitude, and we got to know each other a bit on the slopes.
The Volkl Inuk may have a badass looking eagle design on the topsheet, but a squirrel would better describe the, um… squirrelly way these skis perform. The narrow waist and generous sidecut allows for very quick turns, like an eagle swooping in for the kill. But in the case of tracked up conditions, predator becomes prey when these lightweights get tossed around.
Of course, it’s tough to power through the rough stuff when you weigh next to nothing, and with the super light Marker Tour bindings mounted on them, the Inuk are ridiculously feathery (BTW, I loved the way the Marker Tour bindings skied.)
In a nutshell, the Inuk skis have the classic, sturdy Volkl feel, but are best for long, multi-day tours or lightweight gear junkies who don’t mind sacrificing soft snow performance for efficiency on the ascent.
Here are the specs from Volkl:
Core: Paulowina/Poplar Multi Layer wood core light
Construction: Power Construction
Tip: Rocker
Dimensions: 120/83/106
Sizes 163, 170, 177, 184
The Inuk are part of Volkl’s expanded backcountry series for 2011/2012. Features Volkl’s Skin Pin system. Pre-cut skins are available.
