You’ve all seen them, meatheads at the gym mixing their protein drinks right after a workout with a bottle they shake. Chance are, those bottles are a BlenderBottle, a unique utensil created by Sundesa LLC, a company based locally in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Well, BlenderBottle has expanded outside the gym and into the outdoors. These new versions were featured at their booth at the 2012 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market where it seems there are a variety of uses other than just mixing your meal replacement.
Watching a demonstration at the booth revealed how the BlenderBottle works. Inside the bottle is what they call a BlenderBall, a round, wire whisk that mixes pretty much anything that needs to be blended. All you have to do is shake it and the BlenderBall does all the work.
The new outdoor version of the BlenderBottle, and the one featured at the 2012 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, is the SportMixer, a rugged, plastic bottle that looks like it can take a beating on the trail. It features a flip cap that closes tight and includes a loop that can be clipped to a carabiner. It also has a rubber grip, ounce and millimeter markings for easy measurements, and the plastic is BPA-free.
While I’ve never really considered taking meal replacements on outdoor adventures, I can see how the BlenderBottle could be used for other things as well. Camping? Why not fill it part way with dehydrated eggs then add water in the morning after a night spent sleeping under the stars? One could also do the same with pancake mix or anything else that you just add water to… even instant oatmeal.
But of course, drinks are the mainstay of the BlenderBottle, and in addition to meal replacement shakes, the bottle is good for energy supplements, smoothies, and electrolyte mixes.
I got my hands on a BlenderBottle SportMixer at the show, and will get to test it out this summer for backpacking and travel applications.
