Hiking boots have been hugely popular from Salomon over the years (I’ve owned a few pairs myself) and for Spring ’18, there are a few new models coming out that hikers and backpackers can salivate over. I got to fondle them at the Outdoor Retailer 2017 Summer Market and hope to get my feet into a pair soon.
Quest 4D 3 GTX
The crown jewel of Salomon’s new hiking line is the Quest 4D 3 GTX. According to Salomon, these boots are very light weight for their intended purpose. That is to say, they appear to have the bulk of a backpacking boot, but when I held one in my hand at the Salomon booth, I was blown away at how little it weighed (575 grams to be exact).
Salomon says they’ve adapted running shoe technology into a hiking boot with stuff like rocker in the forefoot. It also has a new sole called High Traction Contagrip, an OrthoLite sock liner, 4D Advanced Chassis for stability, and Gore-Tex to keep feet dry from both rain and sweat.
The Quest 4D 3 GTX will be available at REI this fall, and everywhere else next spring an MSRP of $230.
X Ultra 3 Mid GTX
One of Salomon’s best selling boots is getting an upgrade. X Ultra Mid 3 GTX will now have Descent Control technology that the company says “efficiently tackles technical hikes and really shines during tough descents.” The new outsoles will make going downhill a lot less sketchy, even in wet conditions.
The boots also feature High Traction Contagrip for grip and stability on any terrain and Advanced Chassis for foot control and protection. It also has an OrthoLite sockliner that combines a specific Ortholite foam and an EVA heel cup create a cooler, drier and better cushioned environment with better heel support. GORE-TEX Performance Comfort Footwear rounds it all out. Plus, for the first time, the shoes will be available in a new WIDE fit.
MSRP: $165
Outpath PRO GoreTex
Also new is the Outpath PRO GoreTex. Salomon says these boots (or are they shoes) are light and flexible but highly responsive. It’s a solution for those wanting a light weight boot with ankle support and waterproof materials to keep feet warm no matter how wet the conditions. Features include High Traction Contragrip, injected EVA midsole, Seamless Sensifit upper, protective heel and toe caps, gusseted tongue.
$190 MSRP
