Drinking, for many people, is a great tradition of outdoor trips. What good is a campfire after a long day in the woods without the warming effects of alcohol shared among friends? Cascade Designs, the makers of Platypus hydration products, has created the PlatyPreserve Wine Preservation System with the outdoor (and alcohol) oriented in mind.
Although I’m more of a beer and brandy kind of guy when camping, a glass of red wine on a cold night is a welcome treat. But packing a glass bottle of Cabernet to camp isn’t a good idea because of the weight. Plus, a broken bottle of vino inside a backpack would ruin a trip real fast. To solve this problem, the PlatyPreserve Wine Preservation System is basically a plastic wine bottle, so hikers can enjoy a glass of wine as well as the view.
You can purchase the Platypus PlatyPreserve Wine Preservation System here.
To use the PlatyPreserve, simply pour a bottle of wine into the container, lightly screw on the cap, and squeeze the remaining air out. Not only is the wine safe from breakage, but it’s also being protected from the taste-changing effects of oxygen. According to Cascade Designs, wine kept inside the PlatyPreserve will last for weeks, and still taste as good as the day the bottle was uncorked.
To test out the truth to this claim, I poured some Two-Buck-Chuck (Charles Shaw) Merlot into the PlatyPreserve after enjoying a glass. The left-over wine stayed in a kitchen cabinet for several days and still tasted good. I could however detect a hint of plastic flavor, though that may have been the fault of my dirt-bag wine than the PlatyPreserve.
The PlatyPreserve is easy to clean by rinsing with warm water. It is completely leak-proof, collapsible and light weight. I also appreciate how flexible it is, making it much easier to fit into a cooler than a standard wine bottle.
Now those of us who partake in a outdoor drink can ditch the box wine, and instead bring our favorite bottle of wine into the mountains or desert with the PlatyPreserve Wine Preservation System.
