Viennese Lager, from the Bohemian Brewery in Midvale, is now available in outdoor friendly cans. Their previous canned brew, the Czech Pilsner, has become a staple among Utah rafters, mountain bikers, climbers and skiers (who drink), and now the popular lager will join its aluminum encased brethren in coolers across the state.
I brought a six pack of Viennese Lager to Solitude for some spring skiing the day after it was born. The Bohemian Brewery canned it just the day before and made it available at the brew pub. Forget the Budweiser “born on date.” These hoppy suds were born yesterday.
I’ve always enjoyed Viennese Lager on tap, but how does it taste in a can? I hate to say it, but I think the can actually improves the beer. Maybe the sunshine, stellar skiing in Honeycomb Canyon, and the bratwurst-scented party atmosphere in the parking lot affected my opinion, but in a can, this beer is delicious and dangerously drinkable. As it’s in a can, I can’t say anything about the color or foam, but the taste is slightly hoppy with some sweet notes and a clean finish with no sour after taste. I’d consider the Viennese Lager the every definition of a “session” beer.
So outdoor drinkers rejoice, for everyone knows a cold beer after a long day in the mountains or desert is beyond description, which makes beer a powerful motivator to get back to the car. Now Bohemian has given us another choice… Viennese Lager in a can.
