The Red Bull Rampage, a mountain bike freeride-event in Southern Utah, returns this fall. Located at a venue just outside Virgin, Utah, the Red Bull Rampage sends the world’s best mountain bikers through technical terrain filled with cliffs, gap jumps, and red-rock mountains that fall 1,000 vertical feet. It all goes down on October 1-3, 2010.
As the name suggests, riders will “rampage” as they choose a line down a network of ridges from the starting gate. A bunch of hand-made features will stand in their way to the finish line, including a 60-foot gap jump over a canyon. But athletes will have to do more than just make it down and survive. Competitors will also be judged on style, amplitude, fluidity and difficulty of the line.
If you’re thinking this sounds like a freeskiing competition, you’d be right. It’s clearly an awesome spectator event, and limited tickets are available for free through a pre-registration process. It’s not an easy way to spectate, however, as anyone who wants to watch the rampage will have to hike or bike 3 miles to the venue. To register for a spot, visit www.redbullusa.com/rampage. Tickets will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis to the first 1,000 people.
Here’s the schedule. Thursday and Friday are open practice days for the competitors, when they will be able to scout their lines, and practice those gap jumps and tricks. Then on Saturday, each of the 28 invited riders will take two runs. Their best single-run scores will determine the top 14 who will advance to Sunday’s final. The 14 finalists will run two more descents on Sunday, with their best score determining the overall winner. In addition, the Utah Sports Commission will also present a Red Bull Rampage Best Trick award on Sunday.
