If you ski the backcountry in Utah, then there is something you must do right now. Get on Facebook, and “like” the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center page. There has been a lot of activity on their wall these days as several videos have been posted showing the extremely weak snowpack we have right now, and how easy it is to trigger an avalanche on the faceted, sugary snow that lurks beneath the surface. Scroll down and watch some of the videos embedded below.
Utah’s avalanche forecasters have been busy these days, shooting informative videos along with their snow-pit digging and snowpack analysis duties. These videos really hit home about how dangerous things are about to get when a storm finally come to Utah and overloads the snowpack. It’s one thing to get up in the morning and read the Utah Avalanche Center’s daily forecast, but these videos actually show you what they are talking about, and it’s sobering to see.
The Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center are a great organization that keeps us backcountry skiers informed and helps the avalanche forecasters stay in business by providing funding and facilitating avalanche awareness education and events. Now their Facebook page is yet another tool we can use to help us make informed decisions before slapping skins to skis and touring into dangerous terrain.
