Utah is one step closer to getting a brand new ski resort. According to the Logan Herald Journal, the Cache County Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for a master plan for a proposed ski area called Cherry Creek, located three miles east of the town of Richmond.
The vote was almost unanimous as commissioners decided that the proposal, led by Logan Checketts, met the provisions of county ordinances. According to Checketts, construction could begin this year, with an anticipated resort opening in the fall of 2013.
Cherry Creek Ski Area plans to be a small resort aimed at local families who want a nearby option to hit the slopes. Planners expect a peak accommodation of 1,000 skiers per day on 203 acres of property, with proposed facilities that include a 10,000-square-foot lodge, four ski lifts, a terrain park, zip line, cable tow for a tubing hill, maintenance facilities and a warming hut.
Of course a new ski area will always have opponents, especially from residents who live nearby. Voiced concerns include increased traffic, noise, and impacts to wildlife. Others are concerned about whether a ski area at such a low elevation would get enough snow.
In any case, expect to hear a lot more news about the possibility of Utah getting its 15th ski resort in the very near future.
