Fikkes, a mashup of the words fish and hike, is a company that combines two great things that go great together. Many people take their fly rods along on hikes to lakes or on backpacking trips, so the slap-to-the-forehead idea is simple – turn your fly fishing rod into a hiking pole. Fikkes showed off their Fly Hiker and Spin Hiker models at the Outdoor Retailer 2012 Summer Market.
The Fly Hiker is just what it sounds. It’s an adjustable carbon fiber trekking pole that stores a fly rod inside. They say their 3 weight fly rod is perfect for high lakes and streams, while the available 6 weight fly rod is better for those larger trout and steelhead.
To use it is simple – when you reach your destination, dismantle the trekking poles by unlocking upper and lower shafts, pulling them apart, then removing the fly rod hidden inside. Assemble the rod, and attach it to the trekking pole handle. Viola! You’ve gone from hike to fish.
In addition to the Fly Hiker, new this year will be a spin caster version. The Spin Hiker will be much the same design, only made from aluminum instead of carbon.
So if you’re sick and tired of snagging your fishing pole on branches and brambles while hiking to your favorite backcountry lake or river, then give the Fikkes Fly Hiker and Spin Hiker a look. And for those of us who don’t fish, but love backpacking, this ingenious piece of gear may sway you to cast for your dinner at those beautiful backcountry streams.

STUDENT NEEDS HELP
Dear outdoor lovers,
With my dissertation I aim to find out how (outdoor) companies can communicate their environmental initiatives more transparent and authentic. Only when they take society’s feedback into account and talk/act openly a difference towards a healthier planet can be made.
