It’s crazy. A very, very early winter storm dumped 6 inches of snow on Alta, and insane skiers thought that was enough to drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon and make some turns. One of those skiers, our good friend Eric Ghanem, even went so far as to ski Gunsight. A bunch of that new snow filled in the bottom of the chute, and as you can see from the photos below, there was plenty for ridiculously early-season skiing.
According to Eric, his motivation for the run wasn’t just to ski Alta in September, but to also continue his skiing streak. Officially, he now has 48 months of skiing in a row. After making the run, he says it’s the best summer-skiing conditions he’s ever had.
Apparently, he only had to walk about 1/4 mile, and the rest of the trip was on skis. He was only able to get 400 feet below the top of Gunsight and ski until about 200 feet to the end, but got into shin-deep powder at its deepest. He even skied the trails and Albion Basin Road to get back to the car.
Now I just hope it all melts and fast. We don’t need that snow hanging around making a weak layer in the snowpack this season…
