It’s the biggest night in skiing, or at least ski movies, or at least ski movie award ceremonies… ok, it’s just a big night in skiing. But the 14th Annual Powder Awards are big, and they return to Salt Lake City this December. With ski season just getting underway, the best ski athletes and filmmakers will gather in downtown SLC at The Depot to honor themselves and the amazing skiing caught on film last season.
The 14th Annual Powder Awards is open to the public, though tickets may be tough to come by. According to Powder Magazine’s press release, industry guest invites are available now, with a mandatory $12 donation, exclusively through the Powder Store. Limited admission is available so do it now. Proceeds from donations benefit Wasatch Backcountry Rescue.
Not familiar with the Powder Awards? Basically, a judging panel that includes the Powder magazine staff, ski-industry veterans, photographers, filmmakers, and “ski-film savants” reviewed 30-plus film entries to determine the nominees. The winners will be revealed at the Powder Awards on Friday, December 6 at The Depot in Salt Lake City during the show.
“This was one of the most challenging years to be a judge of the Powder Awards,” says Powder Magazine Editor John Stifter. “Between Best Jib and Best Line alone, we had more deliberation with the panel than ever. Add in Best Female, Best Male, and Movie of the Year, and it’s a stacked lineup of nominees. I can’t wait for the public’s reaction to the winners in Salt Lake City, as it really speaks to the high level of skiing and cinematography in our sport.”
In addition to the awards, the party continues on Saturday as the whole shindig moves to Snowbird. The Tram Deck will be ground zero for the after-party where Sierra Nevada will be serving up brews, DJs will be spinning tunes, BBQ will be cooked up for the masses, and you’ll have a chance to rip peak with your favorite pros, then get autographs at what organizers are calling “The World’s Largest Autograph Session.” No word on whether representatives from the Guinness Book of World Records will be present.
