In the world of skiing, the shot ski is many things: apre’ tradition, a faster way to get you and your friends drunk, and even a rite of passage. But this month, the Wasatch Brewery will take the shot ski to the next level when they attempt to break the world record for the longest continuous shot ski.
For those of you who don’t know, a shot ski is literally a ski with shot glasses glued to it. To complete a successful shot ski, a group lines up, lifts the ski with shot glasses filled with alcohol, and simultaneously takes a drink by using teamwork to tilt the ski. So on Saturday, October 22, a record-breaking attempt will happen when 1,000 people gather on Main Street in Park City and take a shot of Wasatch Premium Ale (the first craft beer brewed in Utah after Prohibition).
The current record holder is the Breckenridge Distillery in Colorado. In January of 2016, during the annual Ullr Fest celebration, 881 people set a new shot ski record by drinking spearmint Schnapps off 277 bolted-together skis.
Wasatch Brewery aims to destroy that record by enlisting 1,000 friends and supporters to line up and take a shot at precisely the same time. It will take a lot of coordination to make that many people tilt those skis back all at once without spillage. One question I have though – will the record count if they are using beer instead of liquor?
In any case, when the record is broken it’s party time. A big celebration will go down in the Wasatch Brewery parking lot and beer garden. There will be live music by the Utah County Swillers, games and beer poured in actual pint glasses.
